Democratic Norms & Elections

We very proudly proclaim ourselves to be the second largest democracy in the world. True as far as the game of numbers to elect public representatives to form the Government is concerned. However, every political system has inherent norms attached to it and without observing them one cannot claim to belong to that category. In the current run upto elections for 15 th Lok Sabha we are witnessing strange permutations and combinations of diverse ideologies not based on identical manifestos but motivated solely to grab power at any cost which is not the spirit of democracy.

Further, in the campaigns for elections all ethical norms are being thrown to winds. The offensive and abusive language against adversaries is being used freely without any fear of consequences. There is a made race to out do as witnessed recently from the utterences of Varun Gandhi, Manish Tiwari, Uddhav Thackeray and score others in the queue. Are we evolving a new set of norms and project to the world for democratic governance. If this the prepoll sceniario we can imagine the post poll scene.
